Midwinter Retreat Special Edition T-Shirt and Poster

The special edition T-shirt and poster for the retreat, designed by Lauren Renzetti, illustrate how Unitarian Universalists in southern Ontario and southern Quebec are connected through the Great Lakes waterway system. The setting at Cedar Glen features many cedar trees, some with unique and interesting shapes. The Unitarian Universalist symbol of the chalice, along with the locations of all UU congregations, provided a foundation for the design. The Great Lakes, renowned for their diversity and beauty, are a vital aspect of southern Ontario and provide all these congregations with the gift of fresh water.

Symbolism in the T-Shirt and Poster

The symbolism depicted on the T-shirt and poster is diverse and interconnected. Some elements may be immediately apparent, such as the cedar tree, which has the appearance of a cultivated bonsai and features the UU flame at its centre. This represents how we cultivate our beliefs, shaping them to meet individual needs.

The base of the tree can be interpreted as roots, yet it also represents the Great Lakes waterway system. Small chalice icons signify the UU congregations and fellowships located near the Great Lakes. Our interconnectedness is expressed through water, land, friendship, shared belief systems, and our collective commitment to a democratic and just world. We value respect for all beings and spiritual living, which encompasses the individual search for truth and meaning.

We share the flame and the life-giving water. By sharing our stories and histories—our pasts and herstories—we seek understanding of the past and move forward together, striving for a better future.
